Luggage transfer desk as a concept is near non-existent in Europe, with the rare exception of countries where there is a significant network of domestic-only airports with no customs. Which essentially means Nordics and Turkey only.
Good points. My issue is I had to ticket on two reservations (UA award travel to CDG, paid AF ticket CDG-NCE), so there was no way to have a single itinerary. I recognize the risk of my initial flight being late resulting in no protection on the AF flight, but I did allow 4 hours in between. I did exactly what you surmised - thinking of airports with the transfer desks you described.
I'll just plan to take my bag with me over to T2 and check it there.
