Giving this more thought...boarding pass needs to be scanned just as you are about to place items in bins. After clearing with boarding pass and passport, place passport in its secure location in fanny pack etc and any other loose items including phone tossed into hand baggage or backpack leaving only items in tray as laptop, bag and perhaps boarding pass.
I have also observed standing in line for scan as bags back up after passing scan how easy it is for anyone to steal an item. Backpack, hand luggage and laptop unlikely...smaller valuable items asking for trouble.
How many times I have checked and re checked ...the troublemaker is taking items in out of trouser pockets where you have other items that can be inadvertently pulled out and fall to floor without anyone noticing.
I have made it a habit of trying to be kind to travelers in front of me who have open pockets or unzipped bags standing in front of me as it is so easy to forget having opened but not closed a compartment.
Common sense mostly but always a good discussion to have had to prevent problems.
