A case was submitted and I was told to give them "7 business days". When I called back a week later, they said that the case was transferred to a new department and I have to wait another week for them to process (I will get an email). The agent told me that he had multiple cases in the same situation (50k and 35k FNCs given by credit cards). By the end of the week I called to check on the status as I did not receive any reply. Out of my surprise the agent told me that the department concluded 3 days ago (I did not get any reply obviously) that there is no way to reinstate the FNC and there will be no compensation. The first agent extended the FNC by selecting the reason as "illness". Since I'm ill, I won't be able to use it, thus even if it was deleted before the expiration date there is no need to reinstate it. They were unwilling to compensate 50k points as it is "not within their authority". I asked to be transferred to a manager, he was unwilling to do so and only did after I insisted. After waiting for >5 mins the agent told me that his manager tried and somehow with his "magical power" the 50k FNC has been reinstated (I called more than 10 times during the 2 weeks and all agents+managers tried to reinstate the FNC but in vain).
Moral of the story: extend 35k and 50k FNCs at your own risk. Even if the agent was kind enough to do so, you risk losing them and wasting a bunch of time getting them back.
Same thing happened to me last month, when I still had one month before my cert expired. I shared my experience upthread. I wasn't getting anywhere with their reps, so I ended up filing a CFPB complaint against Amex asking for either the $450 fee charged on my Amex Brilliant card last year, or they can reinstate my 50k cert making me whole. It took them a week before Amex reinstated my cert.
Like you said, if one was to phone in to extend the fnc cert, be ready for a fight.
