You guys do know that "Cathay" is a historical name for China, right? One of its users was Marco Polo.

"Pacific" was its founders' vision that one day CX would cross said ocean from China.

So a singular Cathay would mean China (specifically northern China). China Airways? China Airlines? (already taken) and may not bode well with Hong Kongers.
