The sign-up bonus for the United Explorer isn’t that great at the moment (50k miles for $3k spend in 3 months) but my husband will get the 10k referral miles and I can take advantage of the 2 United club passes and the Global Entry credit before our trip next month. FWIW, don't expect rapid turnaround from Global Entry. I put in my renewal application last May - 4 months before expiration - and they didn't do anything with it until about two weeks ago. It's entirely possible my experience was anomalous or that they prioritize new applications differently than renewals, but my sense is that they're enormously backed up.
