I now have a Plan B, with passport in a small pocket in my carry-on.
My routine is as follows -

While in the security queue or walking up to it, I put everything on my person into the front pocket of my carry-on bag. Wallet, phone, watch (though that's not necessary), belt, Passport and boarding pass. At the same time, I get out my laptop if I'm travelling with it and any liquids if I have any.

It means I'm ready to throw all my stuff into the trays when I get there, no delays. At the other end, I do the reverse - the laptop and liquids bag go back into the carry on, then I get all the rest of my items out of the front pocket of the carry on and put them back where they belong.
