The main reason for paying for 1st class would be that you want to travel 1st class surely, rather than FF miles?

If you book on partner carriers ( e.g. JL for Japan ) then the rates are still fixed as before subject to award availability. For AA travel, points requirements are dynamic and 800k would suggest that it is a busy flight
