Doing a quick Google flights check seems like there are other airline options for around $3.3-$4K for premium economy for BOS-SYD in Dec, but I don't know what the upgrade scenarios are on those, but may be worth investigating. Paying a $2K premium to die on the upgrade list seems a questionable decision.
