One thing that always stuck with me was hearing about some plane crash or other where many of the passengers survived but some of those who didn't were found in their seats, still strapped-in but having suffocated in the fire with the explanation appearing to be that in the panic they had continually tried to open their seatbelts in the same way you would in a car, i.e. by pressing the mechanism, instead of the "pull and release" of an airline safety belt. Whenever I sit down I always do and un-do my belt a couple of times in an attempt to get some muscle memory
I read this on FT years ago and do the same thing!! I get the occasional funny looks from seatmates but it’s now habit. I also count the seat rows to the nearest exit just in case…
