I've wondered this many times. We've all seen the Dept of W&M stickers on fuel pumps everywhere. I would think they would require the same control when rental cars are now charging us to the tenth of a gallon based on some reading in a car, which I have significant proof is consistently not right (Avis app shows reading of X before I pump gas; I pump Y gallons into the car; Avis app reading does not come close to being the sum of X+Y). If the pump is calibrated, it's kinda obvious that's likely correct and the car reading isn't. If/when a class-action lawyer want to take this up with Avis, I'll be first in line!
I suspect you agree to the use of the fuel gauge and/or connected car/telematics when you accept the T&C.
