Well, if you remember NW's schedules in those days, their flights arrived too late at night and departed KUL too early in the morning for any type of connection traffic.

If you look at the present MH flight schedule to/from KUL, you'll notice more convenient times to connect intra-Malaysia as well as a few other cities in South and SE Asia.

Regarding ethnic returning traffic to Malaysia, more than half of the Malaysians I've met in the U.S. & Canada are not from KUL, but mainly from PEN & JHB.
