This meal would not have been my cup of tea as a child or as an adult, but I do think it would have been pleasant (at least in theory, if not practice) for a much higher percentage of children than OP is suggesting. I don't think I've ever been served something spicy on a BA flight (and not for lack of trying or hoping otherwise), so I'm a little skeptical of the spiciness concerns.
