Unfortunately, I don't see any pattern and I tend to think that AY releases award seats more or less without a pattern. They might be available months in advance, and they might become available along the way, or even last minute, but then again, they might not. It's not like some airlines which release lots of availability either 330 days out or only a few days before the flight.
If you have status, you can always ask to waitlist an award. It costs 1000 points extra, and if the waitlist does not clear, you will get all your points back. You can also cancel the waitlist at any time and get your points back. You will pay the taxes only when the waitlist clears.
