Why announce boarding, but not open the eGates until the 50 people who want to check in their hand-luggage are all processed?

I have seen some general improvement in service levels on-board of late, but the T5 experience is going from bad to worse.
This is a good summary - the roped off tensa-barrier lanes just feel like the perfect visual metaphor of how annoying and generally poor the boarding process is in T5 (and it seems to have gotten worse this year, based on a number of flights I've done in the past few months)
