Why announce boarding, but not open the eGates until the 50 people who want to check in their hand-luggage are all processed?

I have seen some general improvement in service levels on-board of late, but the T5 experience is going from bad to worse.
I used to like to board last but now with so much oversized and so much hand luggage coming on, if you’re in row 1 with no overhead locker it’s a problem. I’d let group 1 through the gates first then do the hand luggage check in at the gate thing. I’d also proactively go through the queue to ensure the group 1 line had group 1s in it rather than stand around chatting. As it is, boarding is a total shambles. And on board, wouldn’t it be sensible to speak to customers about meal choices before take off especially when the crew are just chatting. And why do you sometimes get a paper menu and sometimes not? I just get the sense that the staff often don’t care and don’t think about putting the customer first. Currently on AY100 having lovely service in their new cabin, although a Finnish gentleman sounds as if he might have had too much blueberry juice and will be met by officers on arrival.
