As to the "wrongness" of the thing, you're dealing with a soulless corporate behemoth in which morality is never, in fact can never be a factor in decision making, only self interest, what's legally possible, and public perception, so act accordingly.

Returning the refundable ticket after checking in might not be so easy.
I have checked in, had luggage checked in and in the airport waiting for a flight. Left the secure area, came back to the counter - got my luggage back, got a refund, then walked 2 counters over, bought a new ticket and checked in and checked baggage for that flight.
I was flying home after a job and an "Emergency" came up and I had to swap flights but the first airline didn't even go to the place I had to go, so i had to swap airlines too.
no biggie, they were understanding and that is why I always buy refundable tix.
Typically the only "Caveat" is 30 minutes prior to departure
