Part of my childhood was in southern France. I'm not sure I was given much else to eat there, other than pasta + tomato combinations, and no scope for being a picky eater either - the family dogs would only benefit. So for me that would be suitable for children.
Which reminds me of an anecdote relating to how some German and Dutch people find the smell of lamb too strong and even repulsive. The sheep breeds associated with NL and D often have a more mild flesh flavour as a result. But dog food in those countries also tends to exclude sheep meat, whereas in the UK and France dog food is laden with sheep by-products. I'm not sure anyone asked the dogs.
