My family just completed a 4 night stay at this property. Considering that the 1st week of April could be considered Spring Break for most of the USA (well at least in my kids school district), the resort didn't feel as packed as I would have imagined. Breakfast at Don Manuel and the various pools were where the action was but finding a seat wasn't an issue.
Check-in
As a Diamond member, I was offered one of the Casitas (room 53 to be exact). It was a slight upgrade from the Pacific View rooms (the ones in the large buildings) but Manny the check-in guy asked if it's ok for him to check later in the afternoon or early tomorrow morning for any upgrades after the current guests check out. I said sure no problem (in my mind I'm telling myself of course!). Later, we were upgraded to the Don Mares Jr Suite (room 26). There's some pros and cons from the upgrade. Pro: felt bigger inside and outside. Plunge pool triangular and deeper. Con: Really close to Don Manuel so live music could affect light sleepers and guests could peek thru the holes in the bushes if they really wanted to. Pool is deeper so my 5 year old couldn't stand on it.
* I requested a rollaway bed but wasn't charged for it. Unsure if it's complimentary or they forgot. I ended up sleeping on it while my wife and kids were on the King bed.
* Someone else on FT mentioned they were upgraded to a 2 or 3 bedroom suite. Due to Spring Break, I can imagine a paying customer already occupying it.
Breakfast
We upgraded to the buffet breakfast each day since we're not continental breakfast people. We ordered eggs and bacon for the kids and weren't charged. Pancakes and waffles are considered a la carte items with a $10 charge but the waiters gave us inconsistent answers each day. 1st day the guy gave the kids pancakes free of charge. 2nd day only waffles was free. 3rd day only 1 order of waffles. Regardless, the kids were never charged but we still tipped our waiters since we felt they were going above and beyond. Also, we asked for to-go boxes since our kids were more interested in Youtube than eating their breakfast. I wouldn't have asked for boxes if it was just me and the wife.
El Farallon:
Great experience. I won't go much into detail since may other FTers already discussed it.
Don Manuel:
Upscale mexican food. I'm not familiar with mexican cuisine beyond tacos and burritos but I assume these were legit traditional dishes added with a luxurious coat.
Outside food:
* Los Tres Gallos I felt was a great experience with the live band. Order the mexican coffee which they take 2 of those things that looks like Aladdin's lamp and heat up the liquer with flames. End result is similar to a kahlua coffee.
* La Lupita Tacos: Fusion mexican tacos. You can order roasted grasshoppers for $3 USD but would likely gag. I almost lost my lunch!
