You are correct, that was my question to a friend at AA dept. He said they would rather keep it empty. Rather than go back to the lower level. That way, the customer will just give up and eventually burn through the miles as they will see no "value" in them. When I asked if the whole point in FF is that the customer sees value in them, the reply was - it's a short-sighted policy with the new management. They try to copy DL, without them being the quality of DL. And management of AA FF is scared of losing their jobs - including my friend, so they just "deliver" what is expected.
Wow! But this makes perfect sense with what they are doing. So a 800k partner redemption "enhancement" is not far.
