I think you have been very lucky, perhaps much more than what others in this thread have experienced. Yes, ANA availability is not a lot but there are always tons of seats on UA, and at prices a small fraction of the 900k that AA wants. Also easier to find onward space from Japan on star alliance's multiple partners.
I don't quite understand the 900k logic - will AA fly with empty business class seats now rather than open them up for awards?
