Why am I on the standby list?

Last October I booked PDX - HND - PDX flights in Comfort+ for my family of 3. We had assigned seats in Comfort +


Then late February we received the dreaded schedule change Saturday email saying they had canceled the PDX direct flight and rebooked us to connect through SEA. At the time, there were no Comfort + seats available, it wouldn’t allow me to select a regular Main Cabin seat but it said we had a confirmed reservation and a seat would be assigned at check in.



I have been checking periodically for open seats and was able to nab 1 Comfort + seat. The other 2 passengers have remained as “No Seat Assignment”



Now I am 24 hours out from returning home and I just completed online check in. Still no seat assignment and now it says I am on the standby list for seat assignment?? Positions 4 and 5. (Edit: now bumped down to 6 and 7??) There are other passengers on the Comfort+ upgrade list??

How can I go from having a confirmed reservation to being on the standby list? is there anything I can do now or do I just wait till I’m at the gate and hope my family can get seats?

(assuming we all get on the flight, how do I go about getting a refund in fare difference assuming we are downgraded)
