If on an A330 or other plane with PTV, however, you may want also to avoid the Airshow program, which shows the plane's location on a map.
To get an idea of general routes taken (which can vary), take a look at graphical flight status pages, especially while the flights are actually in transit at night. This doesn't work 24 hours a day, but right now the following flights are underway:
DTW-NRT
SEA-AMS
DTW-AMS
You can see the difference between SEA-AMS and DTW-AMS (much further north), and that DTW-NRT does stay over land for almost the whole journey, which is much longer than to AMS.
