If you miss your same-PNR connection, you will not have to "book a new one". AI will put you on the next available flight. Why would they make you pay airfare or baggage fees for something that is not your fault? Simple common sense applies here.

And no, AI is not "almost always many hours late". You can check recent arrival times of your flight on flightaware.com.
