There was a time not so long ago that the current owners had not taken care of the building to the point that there were deacis in the structure threatening the future of the property period. The problem with the regency has been bigger than just no cheesecake and courtesy car like it used to be.
It shouldn't be a problem to say a hotel is a shell of its former self. Most things travel are. Heck WOH itself isn't the same program as the grand old days or Faster Free Nights and Diamond Arrival Gifts. We all get it. Travel changes. But seeing what Hyatt is currently offering in Honolulu is sad to those of us who got to experience the Regency when it was at its service peak.
I'm in no way saying I hate the Regency or won't stay there. It is usually my go to just because of upgrades alone. Bur having gotten the flu on a visit a few years back and having no access to room service, it really hit how much the service had declined.
SOnce the pandemicz all of Honolulu has declined in service. Even the Royal Hawaiian, a luxury collection hotel, has no in room dining, and the Waikiki Beach Marriott (a hotel I actually do hate) no longer offers titanium members free breakfast buffet. It's definitely an industry wide problem. My point on the regency is Hyatt used to pride it as having exemplary service rivaling that of the Royal Hawaiian. The company seems to have given up on Waikiki over the past decade. Now it's as good as anyone else, but that used to be a low bar for Hyatt.
