Fact is Marriott and especially the hotel owners/operators love these 'junk' fees. Resort Fee and Destination Fee are becoming increasingly more common, and they provideessentially zero value or benefit to the customer who is staying at the property.

Often times these $25-$50/nt junk fees include crap like 'free wifi' which is already a standard, or something that elites already get from their status... or other crap like '2 waters daily' or '24hr gym access'. Or, the destination fee doesn't even provide anything, it just is a way to get effectively increase the room rate and provide nothing for it, not even points.

Try emailing Marriott customer service and asking what benefits a resort fee or destination fee includes from various properties. Often times they don't even know and make up crap like it is a local tax which is entirely incorrect. I've directly contacted hotels and they couldn't even tell me what is provided for the junk fee.
