NW flights to India generally route through AMS so they're trans-Atlantic. The farthest west NW trans-Pacific flights go is BKK.
As for avoiding large stretches of ocean, the farther north and east you fly from the U.S. to NRT, the less ocean you'll cross (generally). For trans-Atlantic flights, SEA-AMS will be your best bet.
