It is highly dependent on the situation and the lounge attendant. It helps to ask nicely, but also mentally to be prepared to be turned away. (As in, hey Family, I will try to get us in, but it may not work as we are stretching the rules here.) In my experience, this also applies to contract lounges, here I regularly had the complex situation of PP access being formally for 4 out of the 6 and then it came down to age checks etc. (and there lounges differ in terms of threshold and fees). The vibes often determined whether they even started that process or were simply waving us through. Also here it helps to be prepared, check in advance their rules for access and then ask yourself how much you would be willing to pay for access on top of what you have anyway already. In general, I found Amex Plat (and the 4 PP accesses it includes) great here, doing the trick almost always. On LH the status benefits for families are great actually, as long as you‘re SEN or above. If that can‘t be had, so it’s *G, then Amex Plat helps almost everywhere - except for LH hubs, which typically don’t have good PP options in the LH terminal.
