Even at places where "stand to the right" signs are in place, they are routinely ignored. (Do they have the signs at CLT? Passengers standing on the left is a much bigger problem there.) In any event, my "pardon me, "excuse me" technique generally works ok.

Fair point. In the NYC subway, close to 100% if people stand to the right, so I guess people who aren’t used to lots of escalators don’t know to?
