Conclusion

Thanks everyone! I called and at first was told they couldn't do anything because they couldn't change the BA flight from IAH to LHR and there were no other options that would get us to IAH in time for the BA flight. But I did as suggested and asked to be moved to AA metal from PHX all the way to LIS and now...

Of course you can cancel and rebook but that would require AA award space at the level you want to pay.
for the same number of points and they refunded the $1500+ in fees and taxes and charged me $11.60 instead.
