This all sounds good but will OP really get the carrier imposed surcharges refunded? There have been lots of times where I've gotten rebooked after a schedule change and I've never gotten a refund or paid anything additional. The ticket is generally not re-fared in cases like this, is it?

Of course you can cancel and rebook but that would require AA award space at the level you want to pay.
