I usually start with multi-leg search on AA.com, which will usually price trips correctly if the layover meets maximum connection time. But Google Flights is fairly impressive in its ability to get itineraries to price on aa.com that I can't get to show up with the usual tricks.
I feel like it used to be a lot easier to get unusual itineraries to appear on aa.com. The search page returned many more results (>40 as I recall, which seems to be the going limit) with unusual layovers and more likely to include segments on non-OW partners if you scrolled down far enough.
Winner. Not only did multi-leg on aa.com do the trick - it came out as less $$$ than it would have been direct on Monday instead of flying to MIA Sunday night. THANK YOU. Bought a plane ticket today.
