Yes, try to find an (allowed) reason you cannot take the BA flight, like the additional layover means you must depart PHX more than 3 hours earlier.

Ask therefore to be re-accommodated on an AA operated flight (have a plan to recommend.)
AA can force open J award space on their metal. Then ask to be refunded the hundreds of dollars of BA fees.
Is it only three hours? I thought it was four hours. The new flight leaves at 5am (!) and the old one was at 8:45.
