I've taken things like this out of boxes and padded well in a hard shell suitcase before, mainly due to not wanting to advertise the contents by using the original box - still struggle a bit in my head with US baggage claims being landside and very accessible by anyone off the street.

That said, as others have mentioned, these things travel globally in the boxes they arrive in which probably makes the original box/packaging the safest idea from a robustness perspective.
