The requirement for desk check-in became reinforced over the covid years when airlines needed to check vaccine paperwork and test certificates before accepting passengers.
It's going to take some time to get out of that mindset.
But as you found out. there'll always be the possibility of blagging your way through. Best no to count on it though: failure on a b2b mission could be expensive.
