What should I be asking for when I contact AA? Obviously I'd like to be rebooked, preferably PHX-LHR-LIS, but I'm guessing that since this was an award ticket, they won't be able to do that unless they have award availability and that is unlikely. Can I get any recompense here or is this a take it or leave it situation?

If this added leg is the result of a schedule change, you can ask AA and they should accommodate a flight on their own metal to LHR. If there is an AA nonstop from PHX to LHR that connects you to your LHR-LIS flight, they should put you on that or you could do PHX-DFW/ORD/JFK/MIA/CLT-LHR on AA metal connecting to your original LHR-LIS flight. What they can’t do is force BA to open space on any of their own flights. If you get any push back about getting put on an AA flight into LHR, HUCA (again assuming this is a schedule change). A plus of all of this beyond a better routing is AA should refund you the BA fees that you paid on your original award for the trans Atlantic segment.
