That's good advice generally, but I don't think it really applies to Dublin: there are numerous ways of getting there, by train and ship as well as air, and fares are generally reasonable.
Returning from my most recent trip to the US, I was two hours late into DUB and missed my separately-booked onward flight to London. A last-minute ticket on Aer Lingus, bought an hour before departure, was under €100. The only troublesome thing about flying from DUB is the cost of the airport hotels.
