I suspect the entire industry (just like hotels and airlines) is attempting to figure out how bad and how expensive they can collectively get before someone breaks ranks and decides to provide good service again.
But yes, I have been consistently unimpressed with Avis since the pandemic, and seemingly worse in 2023. The clerks are surly, the cars aren’t clean, the upgrades are minimal (or awful), the connected car system works poorly and often results in fuel charges, most locations are horribly understaffed, and corporate customer service is slow and inefficient.
In the last six months I’ve had more negative experiences than I can count: cars not checked in correctly, waiting for cars, erroneous fuel charges, etc.
I’d quickly jump ship, except: a) I doubt the grass is greener, and b) the only neighborhood competition didn’t survive the pandemic.
