Hyatt Centric Hong Kong = Not Overly Impressed

Introduction I had a brief one-night stay at Hyatt Centric Hong Kong to try it first, before possibly committing to a longer stay in the future. While the hotel has some strong points and the price tag is reasonable, I am not sure that it stood out enough for me to return. Part of the problem is that Globalist suite upgrades are not easy at this hotel and even if we can get a suite, those rooms are not overly impressive from what I gather. Check In I knew suites were sold out for my dates so I did not expect one. I could have probably received a room with better view or a corner room if we checked in at 3pm or later, but since I asked for noon check-in (which they accommodated), I got no upgrade at all ; they said other room types were not ready yet. I cared more about time of check-in so I took the standard room without complaining. That said, I saw lots of room types available so I think the issue was more about a lack of housekeeping staff to prepare a better room for me (I informed them in advance by e-mail that we would arrive at noon) so I can not fully excuse them. Room The room was fine with decent hardware but it was somewhat small, and we were in the less desirable tower. Our views were not as good as from the other tower, and also we had to change towers to go to the lounge. Dining The lounge looked good but it was quite small for a hotel of this size such that they require reservations for happy hour and require guests to choose session 1 (5-6:30pm) or session 2 (7-8:30pm) - not exactly flexible and client friendly. During session 1 the lounge was not crowded at all which somewhat surprised me. In order for them to plan for high occupancy they cut many tables in two with a glass divider which would not be particularly enjoyable if I was sitting there. The breakfast spread was good but some of the food options we tried were of questionable taste so I did not end up eating much. Also when we left there was a long queue which had accumulated at the entrance of the restaurant because they did not have enough staff to take room numbers and lead guests to a table; the restaurant was not full at all so there were plenty of available tables, the issue was simply not enough staff. Wifi Wifi worked well with download speed of 250 Mbps and upload 100 Mbps. Overall I am glad I tried this hotel and it was necessary to trigger the start of the Hyatt promo (first stay does not count), but I won't rush back because there are many other hotels to try in the city. If I was travelling solo and if I was putting less value in having a suite upgrade for a particular stay, I would be more inclined to return, but nonetheless it does not feel like it’s a hotel where we can maximize Globalist benefits. Despite the price tag at Hyatt Centric not being onerous, it’s hard for me to find good value for the money when it’s one of the rare Hyatt hotels where we end up in a standard (non-upgraded) room, not even a better view.
