What would be the entry requirements for something like this? Is it not worthwhile to attempt for such a short time? Am I able to take advantage of one of those airline deals with the brief layover if I just book a roundtrip out of Doha?

It's easy enough to visit Saudi Arabia. You simply need a visa, and I believe US citizens can get one on arrival, though it's probably better, more efficient, to apply for the electronic version: just a matter of filling in a form online, supplying a photo and credit card details.

I'm sure Riyadh has its fans, but I'd suggest Jeddah gives a more manageable introduction to the kingdom.

Muscat, Oman is as easy to reach, doesn't (currently) ask for a visa for a short visit, and has far, far more instant appeal for a short-term visitor.
