The process doesn't start with an SMS, but from the website. I got it a few days ago - on login to the website it will prompt you to verify your "primary" phone number, and gave me the option to select either my US or Australian mobile numbers (both of which are listed on my MP account). When you click the button to do it, then you get an SMS, which comes from the same number as all United SMS messages (26266).

The SMS contains a link, which you need to click on within "1 hour" at which point it will tell you it's verified (no need to login/etc on that session).

All worked fine for me, but does make me wonder why they are doing it - potentially for some future 2FA login process?
