It's the other way around. Airbus stopped making them, because airlines didn't want to buy them. The airlines didn't want to buy them, even though they were popular with the travelers. Here are a few well known reasons for that decision:

1) Higher cost per seat
2) The popularity of point-to-point routes over the hub-and-spoke model
3) Unsuitability of the large planes like A380 (they are hard to fill) for point-to-point routes
