I don't know what the risk is, but this happened to me the other day on a 777-200. I cleared about 48 hours out and was automatically assigned 1A. I think 9A was also available and maybe a couple other window seats. I had a boarding pass for 1A. Then, when I tried to board, they pulled me aside and gave me 12D. It was a bit disappointing.
