Overall, I thought the Conrad Cairo was a nice property as the hard product is well-renovated, but the soft product was inconsistent and spanned from really good all the way to honestly pretty bad. As the 5th Hilton property I have stayed at and the first one to upgrade me to a suite, I guess the Conrad Cairo does deserve a bit of recognition there - 20% suite upgrade ratio (woo-hoo) ;-) Here are my pros, cons, and photos:
Pros:
- Upgraded to a Nile View Deluxe Suite on a cash booking for a base room (the evening before arrival showed an upgrade to an Executive Premier King room, but this changed to a suite the morning of arrival)
- The suite is large and consists of a parlor complex connected to a base king room via a connecting door - the parlor side has the living room with direct Nile view, a small kitchen with oven and stove, and a half-bath - the bedroom has a desk, small couch, bed, and full bathroom with separate tub and shower as well as a larger balcony with "partial Nile" view
- The renovations are nice - though, note the room exudes modernity and modern art vs. any sort of Egyptian character (which is honestly a tad surprising)
- Bed was fantastic with super fluffy covers, plush pillows, and plush/just-right mattress
- Shower pressure was quite nice, at least from the wand head - rainfall head was weak - but you can have both on at the same time, and the wand can be angled downwards
- Wi-Fi worked well
- The paintings in the lobby are very pretty
- USD-to-EGP exchange rate used was fair
- Lounge food offerings were pretty tasty
- Enjoyed both the vanilla and chocolate madeleines during the afternoon
- Evening offerings had tasty cheese pastries and chicken wraps (good flavors and textures) - enough for dinner
- Breakfast (was advised to take in the restaurant for increased choice) was decent
- Good omelet and cheese croissants (though, I wasn't a fan of the pancakes)
- Service was quite friendly - called me by name, the hostess came up and was genuine in asking for feedback on my stay
- The bell staff was fantastic - when I was departing, they remembered my name, asked me about home while I was waiting for my Uber, and convinced the Uber driver to take me even though I didn't have cash (which the driver asked for) by speaking something in Arabic for a minute or two (saved me a lot of hassle, and the Uber driver did apologize to me several times afterwards)
Cons:
- Some of the service was a bit odd and/or bad
- Was escorted to the 22nd floor lounge for check-in, but the associate who escorted me seemed rather pushy, especially at check-in ("Many thanks to Yusuf for upgrading you to a suite" - I already thanked them several times)
- Neither of the club lounge receptionists at check-in or check-out were very personable - mostly business-like, and we had several language-related issues in all interactions (questions that didn't make sense to me or that I misheard)
- Renovations on the lower guest floors continue - I was on the 11th floor which was renovated but could frequently hear drilling, etc. during the daytime hours (the balcony coverings on the lower floors are still there) - at one point, the water was turned off for about 20 minutes or so
- Really bad handling of an incident where I was locked out of my room
- I had noticed before going to bed that the deadbolt on the room door was stuck and was partially out after wiggling the lock handle a bit to try to engage the deadbolt (I gave up and didn't think anything of it) - it wasn't engaged enough to prevent opening and closing of the door
- However, when I returned from breakfast, my key would not work (no light as if the deadbolt was engaged)
- I went down to Reception, they made me a new key, went back up to try again with no change, went back down, they came up with me, tried with the master key and my key to no luck and called a technician and left with my key and the master key
- The technician then demanded to see my key, which I didn't have, and called over a housekeeper to do nothing but say "where is your key? where is your key?" - I ended up raising my voice (which I shouldn't have) as they told me I had to go downstairs again (for the third time) as they seemed to think I was trying to break into my own room or something
- I made the receptionist come up with me - they were very confused as to why I was down there again - who spoke with the technician some more, who then left and finally came back with a laptop that I guess could hack into the door and unlock it
- All in all, a way more frustrating incident than it should have been, and all parties involved should have communicated among themselves rather than leave me by myself to be treated like I was doing something suspicious
Overall, I would consider coming back to the Conrad - I think the issues may have just been my own misconceptions of intent, and I liked the comfort of the bed.
