I had a similar situation but on a much, much longer flight (UA SFO-SIN, clocking in at about 17 hours). Initially the three seats (3-3-3) were full in an otherwise half-full Economy Plus. The person at the window moved to an empty row, leaving me at the aisle and another man at the middle. I told him “great, now we have more space”, as I was expecting him to scoot over to the window. He didn’t take the hint.

I waited a few few more minutes and then asked him more directly what his intentions were staying next to me when there was the possibility of us having the empty middle separating us. I also noticed an unpleasant odour emanating from him. He claimed that he felt he wasn’t allowed to move (the boarding door was already closed), so it was BS. At that point I flagged down a F/A and the look on my face must have told the story, she quickly ushered me to a completely empty row at the front that I didn’t even notice. Thank goodness. What is with these people?
