We were staying in Georgetown without a car, and in the end got the DC Metro to Dulles (apparently the airport station only opened a few months ago) on the silver line, costing about $3.25 per person from Foggy Bottom. Metro took about 30-35m. There was a public bus from IAD to museum which apparently would have taken our DC metro cards, but there was a 30m wait so we just got a Lyft from the airport arrivals area, which is 5m walk at a decent pace. It arrived within 3mins of booking and cost about $18.

We returned to the city to get our luggage from hotel. This time got Lyft from UdvarHazy to Innovation Park metro station (one stop up the line from IAD) as dropoff was literally outside the metro station without needing a long walk, similar price, and also a few mins time saving as starting further up the line, if you time it well!

Having collected luggage we then got a Lyft back to IAD departures. Pricing was a bit unusual in that we got a premium Lyft for about $75 (before tip) whereas the standard ones were pricing about $85. But that's hopefully a good comparison in pricing for future reference.

BA check-in was open and at least one desk manned when we arrived approx 1850 for the 2245 flight with noone waiting (at least they checked us in as Gold travelling in First).

UdvarHazy is a must-see if you're an aviation geek in any way and I'll try to put some photos up in the appropriate forum at some point.

🙂
Did you manage to get into the museum on the mall, as well? I'm curious to hear post-renovation reviews from the FT crowd.
