You can split PNR most anytime. As for companion bags, not sure, but would think you would have to check the bags (not just check-in) before splitting. And see the caution above about the return trip after splitting. Silver are unlikely to get upgrades before the gate and gate upgrades are not processed under after bag check closes, so little harm in waiting.
