This happened to me once in Kentucky, car "rented" for months. Avis later accused me of stealing a car.
They called my mom to tell her I stole it

I built an entire detailed and documented timeline of how I returned it and traveled afterwards.
Google Timeline showing you drove to the airport, showing you flew. Flight documentation, anything you can find.
I constantly asked them to check the security camera for September 15 at 5:34 pm. They never did.
Document everything you can, document your efforts to get Avis to locate the car, document your conversations with them, add it to your timeline.
From here on our ALWAYS take a photo of your returned car, the timestamp and GPS data could be evidence. This is what I do now for every single car regardless of company
