That indication has been around for at least a year if not more and never matches the seatmap IME
I don't think it's seats remaining for sale. I have a flight with only 8 remaining seats left for sale (Y8 inventory), but the seat map shows 60 seats 'available'. If I count out the seat map, I do get 60 seats open on that flight.
However, on another flight with much more inventory (Y9..G9), I count one more seat open on the map than the 'available' number reports.
So I'm not sure what the number means.
