I don't think the late night departure has anything to do with it. I have flown this route many times the last of couple years and I never saw this option available in J or F.
I flew out in F on the same route 2 weeks ago and the soup wasn't on the pre-order menu. Nor was it available on the late night return in J...so definitely something new.
Just found it amusing they are offering JUST the soup from F as a "light" meal option. The soup on my previous F flight was tasty btw.
