Are you planning to travel in Economy Class? While we don't yet know all that will occur once AA eliminates MileSAAver awards, currently one can only combine an AA flight and a partner flight on a single award if both flights are available at the MileSAAver level. You might find it challenging to find AA's JFK-DOH flight available as a MileSAAver in any class other than Economy.
If at least one of the two travelers has never had a Barclays/AA credit card, that's one way to pick up a relatively easy 50K AA miles:
